What happens, exactly, when you press SOS

Equipo BerlinaSep 16, 20262 min read

Most apps give you a red button and no explanation. We would rather you knew today, calmly, than at eleven at night trying to guess.

The alert goes out before you lift your finger

When you confirm the SOS, your alert opens in Berlina's panel and your trusted contacts are told through two channels at once: a notification in the app if they have a Berlina account, and email if they don't. Nothing waits in a queue.

The alert carries your live trip link: whoever opens it can see where you are without having to call and ask.

A contact with no email and no Berlina account cannot receive anything. The trusted contacts screen says so plainly — don't find that out during an emergency.

Pressing it by accident is not a problem

There is a countdown to cancel before it goes out, and even afterwards you can close the alert from the same screen by saying you're fine. A cancelled alert counts against nothing, penalises nobody, and never lands on your driver.

We would rather have ten false alarms than one alert that wasn't sent for fear of being a bother.

There are three ways to ask for help quietly

The button isn't the only one. You can set a code phrase: your phone recognises it by voice during the ride and fires the alert silently. You can also tap the map three times, a gesture that from the outside looks like checking the route.

Phrase recognition runs inside your phone. The audio never leaves it and is never stored anywhere.

Pick a phrase you can say out loud without it sounding odd. A full sentence works better than a single strange word.

What is kept, and for how long

An alert leaves a record: the time, your location at that moment, and who was told. That is what makes it possible to reconstruct what happened if it ever matters. We do not keep the audio of your ride, because we never record it.

Exact retention periods are in the privacy policy, and you can request a copy of everything Berlina holds about you from your profile, under "My data".
